Dear friends and fellow gelato enthusiasts:
First, the news. On
February 12th, 2012, Gelato Paradiso will be ending its lease and
closing up shop in the Atrium Food Court at Fashion Island. Looking back on 11 years in this unique space,
we are incredibly thankful for our interactions with the great local people and
travelers from all over the world who have stopped by to share in our passion for
authentic Italian gelato.
Now, the better news!
It’s just a brief stroll down the hill from Fashion Island to our original
gelateria in Newport Beach’s Corona Del Mar Plaza, which boasts an even greater
variety of gelatos and sorbettos to choose from. To help you get oriented to
the new gelato locale, our Atrium crew will be handing out vouchers with any
purchase from now until February 12th, good for a free yellow cup of gelato at Gelato Paradiso in Corona Del Mar. They’ll
even give you directions for how to get there in a heartbeat! (Though you could
probably just follow the aroma of waffle cones down Avocado Avenue.)
We’ll keep you posted as we explore potential new
destinations for Gelato Paradiso. In the meantime, we look forward to indulging
in some serious gelato with you at Corona Del Mar (and Laguna Beach, too).

Saturday, May 21st: We've waited a whole year for this one, but next weekend marks the revival of one of our favorite BRIDGE events. Bright and early on Saturday morning, crews from all three of our gelaterias will join together with volunteer groups from across Orange County to plant new trees and foster good health among the venerable greenery shading the campus of UC Irvine. Many thanks to the Shadetree Partnership for offering this opportunity to learn about and be good stewards of our environment!
BRIDGE is a company-sponsored program that encourages employees to become involved in the community through volunteerism and financial giving to organizations that they are passionate about. Employees may volunteer at any type of institution or agency, or perform community service of any type that is not directly related to a political party or office. Gelato Paradiso BRIDGE then contributes $20 for each hour of volunteer/community service that the employee completes, up to 12 hours per fiscal year. Employees decide where half of the annual contribution goes, and the remaining half is allocated based on decisions made by a committee of volunteers. Through combining our company’s resources with the energy of our team, we endeavor to make a meaningful impact in our communities.

I love this time of year. The days are growing longer, the weather is nearing perfection, and new foliage is springing forth from behind the scenes, where it's spent a few groggy months regrouping for a wild and verdant premier. The irresistible combination of sunshine and beauty characterizing spring has a strange effect on quality of life, thrusting everyone out of doors, inspired to embrace the day and soak in a bit of the sunshine. The appeal of springtime is such that I'm pretty sure a few people even smiled at me during the rush hour commute this morning. This phenomenon brings to mind one of the most appealing words in all the English language: synergy.
Taking a cue from nature, Gelato Paradiso had its own encounter with synergy over the weekend when the combination of dedicated crew, industrious artisans and loyal, fun-loving patrons thrust us into a record-setting weekend of gelato sales at Laguna Beach! We thank our guests for bearing with us through lengthy lines and hurried service. We thank our crews for keeping smiles on their faces while maintaing a frenetic pace of service on slippery, gelato-coated floors. All the frigid air and precipitation over the past couple of days has given us a lot of time to stay indoors, eat pans of gelato with a miniature spoon, and ponder things...like how cold and rainy it's been. It's a new year, and our artisans have entered it daringly with the debut of a brand new gelato. In the early morning, I pop in to our Corona Del Mar location to chat with our lead artisan, Pedro, about his latest creation: Gianduia Crunch. Though Pedro is quite content letting his gelatos reveal their own qualities, I can tell by his demure smile as he hands me a sample that this is going to be a memorable breakfast. Closing my eyes, my senses zero in on the creamy layers of chocolate blended with a splash of hazelnut. A variation on our classic Gianduia (milk chocolate hazelnut), Pedro has added a flourish of silky chocolate ribbon textured with crushed wafers and crunchy morsels of hazelnut. The resulting gelato is lively, seamless and really, really good.
Lapping up the remainder of my sample-sized portion, I smile and glance over at Pedro, who is shaping perfect billows on a fresh batch of Blood Orange Sorbetto, a seasonal favorite also appearing in our serving case this month. Anticipating my request, he offers me a sample. Surprisingly creamy for an all fruit sorbetto, he suggests I pair it with a dollop of Panna Cotta. Heaven.
We talk gelato for a while, and at 9am I leave Pedro to continue prepping the day's batches. Driving away with the subtle sweetness of the kitchen still on my clothes, I sense the day ahead is going to be a pleasant one.

A Sunday evening at home. Laundry in the washing machine. Feet up on an ottoman. Catching up on some email and prepping for the week ahead. My roommates are up to the same, and we’re all three staring intently into the shiny faces of our respective laptops, typing up a cacophony that would surely drive any visitors away in pursuit of earplugs. Looking up for a moment, I’m unsettled by what can only be described as a flurry of inactivity. Even as we engage so fully with the frenetic commerce and communication of the digital sphere, we appear perfectly sedentary, our bodies and senses disconnected from our minds’ work. With a laundry list of things to accomplish before sleep, I make an effort to narrow my focus back from the general vicinity of our living room to the impatient cursor blinking before me. But before fully returning to the task at hand, I take a moment to wax appreciative for my role, small as it may be, in a company and a product that allows/intends/requires one to sit down and savor it with their full attention, engaging the senses with each hearty spoonful.

If you're in the business of being a foodie, you know that a morning of thinking about, talking about, making and tasting gelato can lead to only one outcome: a highly overactive appetite. That's why, on most days around here, lunch happens promptly at 11am.
Last Friday was no exception, and at 11:01 I was on the freeway headed to one of my favorite lunch spots. Along the way I dreamed of a heaping Greek salad with mounds of feta and a gigantic pepperoncini. After ordering, I sat down with my not-so-dainty helping of greens to discover that the pepperoncini that usually lent it its highly anticipated kick was MIA. Wondering if this were perhaps the innocent mistake of a frenzied line cook in the thick of lunch rush, I skimmed the neighboring tables meticulously for signs of the piquant pepper. No pepperoncini. Anywhere. When I asked the Manager about the absent garnish, he sighed and informed me that it was no longer included on my salad of choice. Just like that, the ubiquitous recession had landed in my salad.
Most understandably, this is a time when many of us are faced with making changes. Restaurants are downsizing and downgrading, pulling in the reigns to see their brands safely through a period of uncertain economics. Gelato Paradiso is facing some changes, too.
As of September 7th, 2010, two of our gelaterias - Monarch Bay Plaza (in Monarch Beach) and Bella Terra (in Huntington Beach) - will have closed their doors. We have loved serving you in those neighborhoods and hope you will continue to savor the experience of hand-crafted gelatos and sorbettos at our remaining locations in Laguna Beach, Fashion Island and Corona Del Mar.
In moving forward we promise that the authentic artisanship of our gelatos and sorbettos will remain in tact. In the age of mass production and transatlantic shipment of foodstuffs, we appreciate a little transparency in seeing what goes into what we eat. That's why Gelato Paradiso invited a group of Girl Scouts into the kitchen to observe the process and ingredients behind our delicious gelatos. When we can see the work behind the product, the ingredients behind the flavor, somehow it tastes that much better. And we like to think it inspires our artisans to know the audience they are creating for as well.

On Saturday, Gelato Paradiso woke up early and gathered at Bella Terra for an all-company orientation in preparation for our Summer of Sorbetto! After the unveiling of new T-shirts and posters featuring designs from local artist Bill Lawrence, the crew sampled fresh-fruit sorbettos, and some new gelatos, too. After a lot of running around and chattering to burn off our sugar highs, we finished the morning with a friendly competition to see who could create the perfect cup of gelato. If Saturday was any indication, it's going to be a good summer!
